Daffodils
It had been warm last week and the daffodils bloomed. I was so excited to see this very cheerful sign of spring, and then so devastated when a couple of days later we had an unseasonably cold day and it snowed. I saw all the little yellow flowers weighed down, facing the earth. So sad! I was sure they wouldn't make it... But they did! I went out today on another walk and they were as bright and cheerful as ever. Way to go, daffodils!
This made me wonder if their thin neck and spathe is meant to bend under weight to protect the fragile trumpet when it snows? Since they are early bloomers, this must happen a lot. Here's a sketch of a daffodil I found in Mellon Park this morning. It was a little one, a little more than an inch from petal to petal.
