Sunflowers

Sunflowers track the sun over the course of the day (heliotropism). They turn to face it as it moves across the sky. While this happens too slowly for you to see it happening while just sitting there watching them... unless you sit for a really long time... I can't help but think about it and smile whenever I see them in bloom.

Another cool thing about sunflowers is that they are actually composed of a thousand tiny flowers in one. The flowers in the middle are disk florets and the ones on the outside are ray florets. You've probably seen birds eating the disk florets before.

Here's a sketch from my perpetual journal that I painted this winter, showing a sunflower that's... sleeping. It's a little past it's prime, but the birds love nibbling on the dried seeds.
