A lichen is not a single organism. It is a symbiosis, sometimes centuries old, between a fungus and one or more photosynthetic partners, typically green algae, cyanobacteria, or both. The fungus provides structure and protection.
The photosynthetic partners provide food, together they form together, resulting in unique pigments that are lichen acids, secondary metabolites produced by the fungal partner that serve as UV protection, water regulation, and chemical defense against grazing. The color of a lichen is its immune system. The ochre and amber washes in this painting represent the stone surface.
