Note
The Mantis Shrimp has over 17 photoreceptors. For context, humans only have three. It was once believed that they saw the world with extreme resolution, but now it is understood that due to the highly specialized nature of each type of receptor, they are likely to see in three ‘zones’. The dorsal and ventral zones (at the top and bottom of their vision) are primarily used for low resolution motion detection, specialized in the blue-green wavelength range. In the midband, they have more varied individualized receptor types that can see many types and wavelengths of light that we are incapable of seeing.
This painting is a depiction of that vision, from the perspective of a mantis shrimp. Each cell is an interpretation of a photoreceptor type, ranging from polarization to color specialization.
