This piece studies the layered growth structure of turkey tail fungi, which grows on decaying wood. These mushrooms help the wood to decompose, making fresh rich soil for new life. With every phase of their growth, the relationship between the nutrients they are collecting from the wood, the weather, and the seasonal fluctuations they encounter, are apparent in the thickness and color of each subsequent layer.
Painted on wood panel, this original artwork represents a relationship between wood and fungus, decay and new growth, representation and interpretation. A faint archeological grid underlay seeks to draw a non-hierarchical attention to the many processes that unfold within nature.
